How to Place your baby - The Adoption Process for Birth Mothers

Choosing the parents

As the birthmother, the choice is yours!  DeColores Adoptions wants you to be assured that you are making the right choice when choosing the adoptive family for your child.  You can view profiles of approved adoptive families that are open to meeting and getting to know you during this adoption process.  We have numerous loving couples that have gone through very careful screening and preparation for their adoption journey.  We also have exceptional staff that are ready and willing to listen to your needs and desires to help you find the right match.  However, if you do not wish to choose the adoptive family we completely understand and will be happy to assist you in a closed adoption.  We understand that this can be a very difficult and emotional time and will assist you in this process every step of the way.

Meeting the family

Once you choose the family, DeColores Adoptions will assist you with a conference call to the adoptive family.  You will have the opportunity to e-mail, talk to, text, or even meet the adoptive parents.

Please know, if you choose to have a Closed Adoption and would prefer no contact with the adoptive family your information will be kept confidential.  In this case, the agency will match you with a family that seems to be the best match for you and your interests.

Give Birth

Prior to the birth, your adoption specialist will make the hospital aware of your adoption plan and any concerns or wishes you may have during your hospital stay.

Placement

After the baby is born, a mom cannot sign anything legally binding until at least 72 hours after, according to Louisiana law.  A mom has the right to change her mind up until that time.  If you are still comfortable with the adoption plan, you will sign the legal paperwork terminating your parental rights at this time.  Once signed, it is legal and binding and cannot be undone.

We understand that this can be a very emotional time for everybody involved and will continue to provide you with guidance and support.

Support

Your adoption specialist will continue to be there for you even after the baby is born and the placement has been done.

We encourage you to stay in contact with your adoption specialist so that she may help you to understand different emotions you may feel at this point in the adoption process.  We understand this can be a difficult time and want to assist you through the entire process. We want you to be proud that you have chosen to give your baby life and made the best choice for his or her future.
