You Choose The Family

As the birthmother, the choice is yours! DeColores Adoptions wants you to be assured that you are making the right choice when choosing the adoptive family for your child. You can view profiles of approved adoptive families that are open to meeting and getting to know you during this adoption process. We have numerous loving couples that have gone through very careful screening and preparation for their adoption journey. We also have exceptional staff that are ready and willing to listen to your needs and desires to help you find the right match. We will help you to build a personalized adoption plan that best fits you and your needs. You have the option to choose the family that you believe will provide your child with a safe and loving home. However, if you do not wish to choose the adoptive family we completely understand and will be happy to do a closed adoption (link to types of adoption). We understand that this can be a very difficult and emotional time and will assist you in this process every step of the way.

Types of Adoption

An adoption begins with the decision of the birth parents to place their unborn child or baby for adoption with another family.  The birth parents can play an active role in the adoption process and decide what kind of adoption plan is best for them.  The birth parents can also be involved in the selection process of the adoptive parents and decide the kind of adoption they want to have.  However, if the birth parent wishes to not play an active role in the process that is ok as well.  There are four common types of adoption.

  • An adoption with an ongoing relationship between the birthparents and adoptive family.  This means that both parties will exchange identifying information and have contact with each other through letters, pictures, phone calls, or visits.  The extent of communication in an open adoption is the choice of those involved.

  • A closed adoption offers complete confidentiality.  At no time is there any identifying information given to either the birthparents or the adoptive couple about each other.  The birthparent allows the agency to pick adoptive parents from their approved, waiting couples, and the baby will be placed with them.

  • A semi-open adoption is one step down from open adoption regarding contact; the birth parents and adoptive parents meet; however, they do not exchange identifying information. There may be ongoing contact between the two parties, but it is typically less often, and it is facilitated through the agency.

  • A semi-closed adoption allows the expectant parents to look through several “profiles” of couples that are waiting to adopt.  All couples have been studied by the agency and are approved to legally adopt.  The birthparents choose a couple to raise their child, but there is no contact, and no exchange of identifying information between the two parties.
